Sasha Morgenthaler
"To follow my dream, to perhaps make dolls that awaken the feelings of love and humanity". (Sasha Morgenthaler)
Sasha Morgenthaler was born in 1893 in Bern. She studied at the Art Academy in Geneva and in Bern where she met and later married Ernst Morgenthaler a painter like her. They also spent some time near Paris meeting many artists there. She was also a friend of Paul Klee and many other artists and intellectuals of her time. Sasha also travelled around the world bringing back memories she translated in artworks mostly related to children and their mothers.
When her children were born, she also invested herself in applied arts making toys for them especially little animals. Sasha designed the animal quartet game “Tierquartett” at first hand painted and from 1939 printed by Tschudi. She applied her great artistic talent in many fields including wonderful mannequins and puppets. For a short while, she also collaborated with a maker of Swiss souvenir dolls. She had also started making dolls.
The Sasha dolls have, by now, been played with and loved by several generations of children (and collectors) all over the world.
In the picture Sasha and Gregor wear traditionnal costumes. Gregor's outfit was made
by Jean Jensen and Sasha's was made by me (with shoes by Jean). Both dolls in the picture are later Götz production

To simplify greatly one could class her production in 4 main groups.
* The Studio Sasha dolls 1940s to 1975 (and course dolls)
* The Sasha dolls manufactured by Götz (Germany) 1964-1970 (who provided the dolls sold by the Swiss chain store Migros)
* The Sasha dolls manufactured by Frido/Trendon (England) 1965-1986.
Last Sasha dolls produced by Trendon in 1986.
* The Sasha dolls manufactured again by Götz (Germany) 1995-2001.
In this second German production some Toddlers where produced
Olli (in 2000); Esther (in 2000); Claudius (in 2001); Elke (in 2001); Iona (in 2001) and Erik (in 2001)
